Tony Hung of Deep Jive Interests is guestblogging at ProBlogger this week and has just posted 5 Prerequisites for Blogging Success. Worth a look and strong consideration for anyone thinking of blogging seriously.
When it comes to time and commitment, I couldn’t agree more. There are many people who believe blogging is as easy as copying and pasting a bit of news – which is ok from time to time, but it’s not a good habit to get into. You’ll develop the reputation of being a lazy blogger who can’t come up with original content all your own – that’s not any way to gain return visitors or loyal readers.
Marketing your blog takes a great deal of time and persistence – if you are shy about commenting on blogs of similar topics or frequenting message boards do draw attention to yourself and what you have to offer – blogging may not be for you.
Commenting and linking is a common marketing tactic that’s echoed by many professional bloggers. I’ve known several bloggers who have tripled or quadrupled their traffic in a very short time simply from having been discovered via a comment link.
Being interesting and realizing it’s all about your readers falls under the same category – at least in my eyes. I couldn’t agree more that you shouldn’t be something your not – because in time, the ability to be anything but yourself will fade and what you have left better, darn well be interesting and entertaining.
Liz Strauss is a prime example of keeping your blog “all about them” – all about your reader. By focusing on your readers – you’re sure to gain loyal readers who in turn will likely turn into loyal link shoppers and clickers.
Personally, if I visit a blog and it’s painfully obvious the writer isn’t putting their heart into it, I’m not going to hang out very long, I won’t visit again and I certainly won’t click their links – it’s would feel as though I were rewarding someone for being lazy.
Now that I’ve provided my thoughts on Tony’s 5 Prerequisites, why not take a peek yourself and see if you have what it takes to be a successful blogger. I’d love to hear your thoughts or if you believe something might be missing from that list, I’d like to hear that too.
