Another day in the life…

by Gayla Baer

Actually, it’s kind of been one of those weeks! Being the multi-tasking person that I am, I tried to kill two birds with one stone or complete two errands in one stop and unfortunately it set me further behind than I’d ever imagined – thus, my distance for the last couple of days (the following took place on Tuesday). My blood pressure seems to be coming back down to near normal now.

After doing the grocery shopping, I handed my kids 13 (almost 14) year old twins the keys and the cart instructing them to put the groceries in the Blazer and I’d be out shortly. I needed to pick up stamps for our Christmas cards.

Just as I had finished making the purchase and started to walk out the door, I heard Trey say, Don’t shut that. Then there was the sound of a door shutting.  Instantly something in the pit of my stomach ached.  I knew what had just happened and I was not happy!

See, we live outside a very small town where the cop hates to be called out away from That 70′s Show reruns to do anything productive. Unless someone is committing a crime against one of the BIG commandments, he’s not going to bother.   And my keys locked in the back of my Blazer with spoiling milk and melting ice cream isn’t one of those emergency type calls.

My first thought was to call my husband. Well, that presents another problem all on it’s own.  The small town is kind of set in a bowl and cell phones don’t work at all you have to be just out of town limits in either the north or south directions to get a signal at all. Next thought go into the store and ask to use their phone. I did.

You’d have thought I was asking to call China for happy hour or something.  The look I got was horrible! But instant I was and the phone I got!  No Answer! Dear hubby was in the garage and didn’t take the phone with him.

Next thought and action call my cousin (that would be Gadget Mim here on MomGadget) and ask that she drag her flu-ee and feverish butt out of bed to drive the one mile to my house and tell my husband to answer the damn phone. She did better than that though, she actually had him come to Middletown.

Of course halfway to town, he realized he’d forgotten the key and had to come all the way back to the house to get it.

By the time he got to us, our ice cream had indeed melted and my blood pressure would have sounded alarms all over St. John’s Hospital warning of an impending stroke.

Regardless, I had made it home in one piece. The boys did too!  Notice I didn’t give any indication here that they’d said a word? Well, that’s because they didn’t! I think in their 13 years of life, they’ve learned when mom’s neck turns red, it’s best to play Helen Keller and shut the heck UP!

That night, I’d settled in front of my computer thinking I would get some work done. Left entirely alone, just me and the sound of my fingers racing across my keyboard  tip, tap, tip, tap, tip, tap  I had made it!Just in time for Open Mic Night on Successful Blog. Something I’d been trying to participate in for the last three weeks I was thrilled!   It was on a topic that was near and dear my heart and I was going to town creating the perfect introductory post.

Then it happened!  You know, that same kid that SHUT the door when he was told not to? Well, he spoke.  He started asking me all kinds of questions about what he can order from his Skateboarder magazine in the SPRING!!!  And being the amazing multitasker that I am, I naturally assumed I could respond to him and post my response at the same time.

Did you know when you have a post ready to make on a blog and you hit the back button, you LOSE IT?   Yep, that’s what happens and I KNOW  firsthand.

It was at that point I decided it was best for me to just hang up my hat and call it a day. At least I was certain I could sleep without any major issues coming up and I was right!

Tomorrow is a brand new day!

oh my Gayla!! this is one of those moments you will treasure!!

About the successful blog, I realized why I missed it last week, and why I missed it this week! I’m not home, I have to have my son at church and didn’t even realize that! I am really losing my mind. Hopefully I can get there one of these days, it looks like a lot of fun.

Gayla – I can totally relate! It is kind of like me deciding to clean out thr fridge last night and dropping a gallon of milk all over the floor in the process.
