Are You a Lazy Little Linker?

by Gayla Baer

Reader Question:

Have you seen requests like this:

Link exchange wanted, but you must be PR 4 or above

Does it matter? Can you really damage yourself if the other is lower?

I’ve never been a big fan of open link exchanges for the simple fact that I am lazy! I don’t like playing link police and feeling as though I have to go back and check to make sure they keep their link to me, etc.

So, since I don’t consider myself to be a linking Queen, I wasn’t quite sure how to respond to the question listed above.

Any tips for this fella?

What exactly are your linking policies? Are you a lazy linker like me?

If it is an unsolicited thing like that from somebody that I otherwise would no reason to link to, I send them to the text link ads order page for my site. If I read them and love ‘em, I’ll write a post about them. I’m not a big fan of sidebar links because I’m too lazy to maintain them and the next thing I know about half of them are to dead blogs.

Mike ~ I like the idea of sending them to the text link order page. I’d never thought of that.

Sometimes I list blogs in my sidebar that I want to make sure to visit again. Being that I’m self diagnosed A.D.D. I find having my favorite links in several places serves me best.

Just because a link appears one place, doesn’t always mean it’s not in my Google or Yahoo subscriptions.

Heck, I’ve got links stashed everywhere – thus the reason I can’t have too many in my sidebars :) I’d have NOTHING but links in my sidebars.

Personally, I don’t like link exchanges. I can’t see the point in asking a stranger for one. It’s not really what I believe blogging to be about.

A much better way to give linkbacks is to remove “nofollow” from your comment section. That way you’re rewarding people who are actively participating in your blog.

I’ve removed “nofollow”.

David ~ Thanks for the comment. I just sent you an email regarding the “nofollow” — I’m not familiar with that.

What is it?
What does removing it do?

You have me a bit curious now :)

Hi Gayla,

I got your email thanks.

Here’s a link to my website where I explain a little about why you should add “DoFollow” to your website.

Gayla. I’ve been writing quite a bit about nofollow on my blog. Please take a look at The Single Most Powerful Way to Thank Your Commenters.

I don’t care for link exchanges with strangers either. I think the whole point of blogs is to get to know other bloggers. I link to blogs that I like all the time and don’t pay attention to their page rank.

I mean, EVERYTHING can’t be about work, you know?

I think link backs rock and could care less about page rank. I don’t link to blogs that don’t interest me. More than half the link exchange requests I get are dumped into my recycle bin.

I do pay close attention to what’s happening around me in the ol blogosphere. I have come across a few pretty awesome bloggers that have linked to me without asking. I do my very best to be gracious enough to treat my blog neighbor in a way that I would want to be treated. It doesn’t always work out and I used to let it bug me but not so much any more.

I wouldn’t say that I “police” my blogs because it really doesn’t take much effort to clean up my stuff or add new stuff to my stuff. I do go through my stuff and de-link if need be.

I also link to blogs that I like that don’t necessarily link to me just because I’m too lazy to save them to my favorites OR add them to my newsreader.

It would be nice if y’all could clarify the no-follow deal because right now I’m too lazy to follow those URLS.

I need to get to bed already!!

I don’t really use side bar links as I find they clutter up my side bar. But, I enjoy do a post for a fellow blogger of their blog with a link in it if their content is similar to mine. I don’t link back with everyone who asks and I don’t care what kind of page rank they have for a link back. If I like their content I will link back.
