Blogger.com No Longer Allows Links to Non-Blogger Sites in Comments

by Gayla Baer

First page rank drop

Then the change in adsense ads

and now…

Blogger changed their blog comment forms, and the the new layout does not allow links to blogs outside the Blogger/Google account system.

Maybe, just maybe they have a good reason for all they are doing, but it would be nice if they would let their bread and butter (umm that would be all us geeks on the net) know about it!

It’s Friday and I’d really rather not get too pissy about Google so I’ll hold this thought until Monday – however, if you have something to add, please, go right ahead.

I noticed that too, was wondering why I couldn’t click on names.

Neena (NeenMachine) November 30, 2007 at 7:06 pm

I was wondering if that was just my browser acting funny.

This will hurt blogspot blogs.

Why would anyone bother to leave a comment if there is no link back? And I am not even talking about “do follow”.

If I take the time to leave a comment and someone reads it and wants to learn more about me, they should be able to find me!

Yet another reason to switch to WordPress!

Mike November 30, 2007 at 7:23 pm

Wow. I never leave comments when people have their settings set up to use the blogger only ID. It just feels obnoxious. That’s really sad if they made that an official non-optional thing. I would be pissed if I had a blogger blog and they made that decision. Why, in fact, I would by my own domain, install Wordpress and move on.

windyridge November 30, 2007 at 8:11 pm

All I can say is WTF!!!!! I guess I am migrating to Wp for this one. I was contemplating it and now it’s a given. I wondered why I couldn’t click on some of the comment links. Google = Gestapo

Busy Mom November 30, 2007 at 8:17 pm

Holy. Moly. I can’t behave professionally about that at the moment.

Good grief.

windyridge November 30, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Let’s all have a migrating party to Word Press. Lots of people have done it and we can all do it together! Weehee

Anne Maybus November 30, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Looks like I am off too! How dare they say who can or cannot comment on my work? Looks like I am off too. Perhaps we should all form am alliance and link ourselves silly!

Linette November 30, 2007 at 9:14 pm

I’m in on the migrating party. I was contemplating switching my 2 blogger blogs to Wordpress right after Christmas. Now I’m sure I’ll make the switch. Since I started a Wordpress blog a while back I’ve been wanting to change my blogger blogs in the worst way. This just adds fuel to the fire.

Seriously? Outrageous! Bad Google – very, very Bad!

Melanie December 1, 2007 at 12:54 am

This is frusterating! I noticed a drop in visitors and everything! I also noticed all the comments were from blogspot accounts! i didn’t realize this was the reason! I am stressed out as I have to rebuild and move the whole thing and start over it feels like? Will my PageRank stay the same and all that if I move everything? Anyone done this? Geez! I should have moved a long time ago but dont’ know how to put google ads on a WP blog? Anyone?

Gayla December 1, 2007 at 1:15 am

boy I’m glad I got off of Blogger when I did. BUT, people have been predicting a slow takeover of blogger for some time.

Wordpress and your own hosting is SO worth it.

I highly recommend HostGator (first choice) or BlueHost (second choice)

That’s crazy! Glad I left blogger a long time ago.

And for Melanie, when you move to wordpress you can import your blogger blog so you keep all your posts. And adsense is easy on WP with Mighty Adsense plugin. It takes a little getting used to but WP us SO much better.

Want a solution to this problem?

Join the Assist Network. It is free to join.

http://www.assist.com/join

Then, in your comment, tell people to “Google” for your username.

Try it. Google for:

assist network betscandles

No URL needed :)

I’ll be so glad to have all the new WordPress blogs to visit and comment at. I get so irritated and normally give up when I visit Blogger blogs. I definitely won’t waste my time trying now. It’s too sad for those that won’t make the change to Wordpress.

Gayla McCord December 1, 2007 at 1:30 pm

I’ve imported a couple of blogs from blogger to wordpress. It’s very simple and saves all your work. You won’t lose a thing.

windyridge December 1, 2007 at 11:26 pm

Some links to help the migration:

http://digitalkeyto.info/how-to-build-a-website/video-for-creating-a-wordpress-database-on-your-web-host.html

you can also install haloscan and that will make the comments become much like Wordpress BUT you lose all of your old commnets.

Andrea December 3, 2007 at 1:41 am

I can understand someone wanting to stop spam but only allowing links to other blogger sites seems a bit proprietary…maybe trying to corner the market? I never used Blogger or Wordpress before but I think WP looks a million times better.

Domestic Divapalooza December 3, 2007 at 2:50 pm

I noticed today when I tried to leave a comment on somebody’s blog that I couldn’t include a link back to my blog. That totally sucks!

I heard about the change they were going to make to Google Adsense Ads to. I understand why they made that change BUT I think advertisers will soon find that their rates will go up as well.

Google has really got me quite pissy these days!

Robin (the pensieve one) December 4, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Hey, followed you here from Suburban Oblivion, and I’m including a link to your post in something I’m writing about today. Thanks :) .

Jody December 4, 2007 at 4:03 pm

I am yet another complainer. I use wordpress.org but am having a problem visiting my friends using blogger.

Karen Putz December 7, 2007 at 1:58 pm

I’m a Blogger user and I had to find out this piece of news here—oooo, that makes me mad.

cutiegadget December 17, 2007 at 1:40 pm

That’s bad. So, they are really strict to give a link back huh? As long we don’t spamming, I think it’s ok, but… Why google, they change policies that make bloggers sad so much

Craig Carrington September 3, 2008 at 12:41 pm

As I’m both new to blogging and have a Blogger blog, I don’t really understand. How would it affect my blog’s readership, exactly?

Gadget Mania September 13, 2008 at 9:00 am

this is news to me, i have a blogger blog and i have a link to a link to my affiliate marketing site and it works fine??

chris October 14, 2008 at 12:17 pm

Will my PageRank stay the same and all that if I move everything?

Seriously WTF November 30, 2009 at 4:02 pm

First Google creates the NoFollow and now they are hurting blogs and websites not on the blogspot network? I think Google is really shooting themselves in the foot with this one. WTF??
