Can a blog be successful without a name or face

by Gayla Baer

reality

While combing through many of my favorite celebrity gossip blogs this morning, it occurred to me just how little I actually know about some of the writers on my favorite blogs.

As I began looking for an ‘about page’ I further realized that I’d grown to enjoy the gossipy goodness they’ve delivered for several months without giving any consideration to who is actually writing.

On the other hand, when it comes to sources of information that pertain to my primary source of income and MomGadget, I seem to have a bit of a double standard.

I’m actually beginning to feel like one of those ‘dads’ that has one set of rules for their teen daughter and one set for their teen son (yep, that’s ripped right from the pages of my existing reality).

Typically I’m one of those bloggers that heads straight for the about page — but I only do that when it comes to topics on monetizing or marketing. I suppose having that glimpse of a real person makes their tips and ideas a bit more believable.

Certainly it could be a fake picture, name and bio, but still, it’s providing me with a ‘person’ that I can relate to.

Does it depend on the topic as to whether the blog needs a name and a face?

Are you an about page vouyer like me? Do you always check to see if there’s some offering of reality behind the blog?

Or does it all really even matter?

I’m with you, Gayla. If I need the person to have credibility or if I want to build a relationship with them, then yes, I want to know everything that I can about them.

However, when it comes to things like celebrity gossip, videos from YouTube, etc., it’s not that necessary to know all of the details about the blogger.

That being said, I do follow your celebrity blogging site, although I haven’t been there in awhile. I’ve been slacking on RSS reading lately!

Aaron, I’m flattered you check in on my celeb gossip. It’s probably the most fun project I have going. :)

I do most of my reading through reader these days. I visit blogs as I can, but I always read most everything :)

Hi Gayla,

If it’s anything to do with business, then I think it’s important to show a face and some bio information.

Anything unrelated to helping my business and it’s not so important, pretty much like you say.

Enjoy the weekend!

Gayla- Funny you mention adding a pic I just did that today. Finally figured out how to put it in my side bar. Woo hoo me! lol. But yes I tend to read their about me page but only after I’ve read a TON of their stuff and realize I hadn’t read who the actual author is. Sometimes I’ll click on their profile only to find another blog they’ve created but never stopped to look until later on.

Well,I read ‘About me’ pages just to find out if it is a ‘real’ person writing or is it just another splog. Reading ‘About me’ helps me know the author better and it somewhats assures certain level of credibility and sincerity of the author. Even if it’s a short one with a couple of lines, it still helps.

I tend to agree with you, though I will keep my blog without the About page, as I don’t know what to write in there.

I think any blog or website should have a face to it. All bloggers or writers should have an about me section on their website or blog. Your visitors should be able to get a brief background about you and why you blog or write, in my opinion.
