Christmas Traditions Carnival

Old Time Christmas Mix

This week, as part of the MomGadget Carnival of Red Hot Bloggers and the topic of Christmas Traditions, I thought it would be fun to go on a bit of a scavenger hunt to see what other bloggers are saying about this very topic! Won’t you come along with me on this little adventure?

The first stop we’re going to make is to visit Helen at Christmas Gift Ideas – Helen is sharing an article on Holiday Treat Traditions Around the World – based on what I’ve read, I’m thinking I’d love spending Christmas in France :)

Now that we’ve endulged ourselves in the celebrated treats of the holidays, won’t you join me as we visit Robert Gillis for a little lesson as he discusses the History of Christmas Traditions.  Robert delves deep into how December 25th came to be the celebrated day of the birth of Jesus Christ – though this date has been challenged for centuries, it’s one of those things that challenges, discussions, arguments and disagreements could never change.

The one historical tradition that facinated me most in this particular article was that of Santa Claus and how he came about.  I must admit that I am very relieved to find that Santa Claus was not the brainchild of some merchant, but rather inspired by a very generous saint.

Ok, now that I have those holiday warm and fuzzies going, let’s wrap up and stroll on to our next stop…

Catriona at Titus2talk out a website by Noel Piper where discussions focus on Christmas traditions and how these traditions can actually set the right tone in our homes – from a biblical sense.

Catriona also shares links to several websites that help you in finding and creating your own family traditions that focus on The Christmas Story.

Katelyn has found a way to capture each holiday in a journal that’s passed around year-arter-year – it’s a great way to provide families with reflections of Christmas’ before.  I only wish I’d thought of something like this while my grandparents were still here.  I think this is something I will try to start this year with my dad’s family – and with my own smaller family.  I’ve got a treasured video of my paternal grandmother’s last Christmas and my maternal grandpa’s last Christmas.

What a special way to capture the holidays for all the generations to come.

Nicoles family has an annual tradition of dining on chili and cinnamon rolls prior to opening gifts.  I know, it sounds a little odd, but when you read her entry, you’ll understand why.   I think it’s a beautiful tradition and one her family will never forget!

If you’re a bit stumped on creating your own traditions, MamaDuck offers up an entire list of suggestions that you can choose from or be inspired from to create your own unique tradition.

Having lost the last of my grandparents in September of this year, I found myself reaching for any reminder of my childhood holidays.  Including this Christmas tin of Old Time Christmas Mix.  While shopping, I saw the tin and immediately had flashbacks of sitting on my grandpa’s lap picking through the candy.  That’s as far as my memory went though.

Once I got the tin home and opened it up, I saw my own family hovering over the tin – picking through the candy and then racing for the trash to spit out the horrible stuff.

Yup, I’d forgot that part.  Now I remember my grandpa and I picking through finding out which one’s were the good ones and the racing each other to get them in the years that would follow.

I’m betting that this tin of hard candy is the hard candy version of fruit cake.

Is there anyone out there that actually likes FRUIT CAKE?

I’m sure over the next couple of weeks there’s going to be many more holiday stories and traditions come up. Won’t you take the time to join in and participate in our MomGadget Blog Carnivals?

I’ve really enjoyed browsing through my little Google Blog Search on Christmas Traditions and finding new random bloggers I’d have never discovered otherwise.
