Cool Beamz – A little luxury gift idea for the music lover

by Gayla Baer

Music and technology have come a long way over the last few years. I remember being a teenager and easily being entertained with my maintenance free, zero cost, air guitar.

Kids of all ages (Uh-hem -men- *cough*) will enjoy The Beamz laser music system that connects to a beamz2 Windows PC via USB and works off six laser beams that transform even the most musically challenged into a devine creator.

Each beam is assigned a musical instrument or sound, depending on which song you select. The device itself comes with more than two dozen songs. These sounds play when you break the beams with your hand.

Beamz is a lot of fun, but it is a little overpriced. However, I’ve seen many people spend $300 – $600 on musical instruments – just to sit around and tinker with.

Set-Up

The Beamz system consists of three components: PC software, a music library and the main W-shaped apparatus you interact with — an 18-inch-tall Beamz controller with a wingspan of more than 2 feet. The controller houses six laser beams, three within each set of controller arms. When you break one of the beams with your hand, corresponding musical notes or sounds are played.

The controller also has a rotary volume control and a few buttons, for starting or stopping a rhythm, swapping sounds or navigating a playlist. beamz1

Setting up the Beamz is pretty simple. You connect the controller to a dedicated USB port on a Windows-only PC. The controller draws its power from the computer through USB; you cannot use a USB hub.

You’ll have to rely on the computer for sound, too, because Beamz has no internal speakers or even a jack to hook up a set.

The controller must sit on a flat surface: Wires underneath the controller’s base can apparently cause the device to behave unpredictably. You are also warned in the user guide, quite seriously, not to stare directly into the lasers. But the company insists the lasers are very safe and in the same class as grocery store scanners.

That said – Beamz is one of those items that would be a great gift idea for any grad or dad who has everything! One of those gifts you get someone because they’d never buy one on their own.

Beamz is available for purchase at thebeamz.com for $199.95

It certainly is an interesting device, but I don’t think we will see a long lasting commerical success.

I’m a technic freak and I like it. Unfortunately it’s to expensive to purchase it only for fun.

This beamz stuff is great, the design looks very cool. Just like those startrek or starwars gadgets we’ve seen. The price? I think it’s reasonable with those fun we can get.

Cheers,
Andrei
