De-Stress Your Body & Mind With Yoga

by Gayla Baer

At the recommendation of a trusted friend years ago, I discovered the personal health benefits of practicing gentle yoga.  I’m in my mid-forties and when my friends hear me say something related to ‘yoga’, they jokingly tease me a bit.  They might chant the ‘Om’ mantra or humorously presume I can put one leg behind my head while balancing on the other.  I’m ok with their sense of humor.  We all know practicing yoga has become a new trend in recent years.  I think there will be even more awareness created in the times ahead promoting yoga for health of the body and mind.

I prefer practicing yoga in my living room or bedroom rather than attending a public yoga class.  (For those of you who go for the social aspect of yoga, I applaud you!)  A friend suggested that I check out this particular product and I’m glad I did!  By following the DVD A.M. and P.M. Yoga featuring Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden in my own space, I can let my inhibitions go and submerge myself into a private, transformational workout.  This Gaiam DVD led me to a positive yoga experience on a daily basis.  The style of teaching is so simple and I had noticeable results in about a week after starting to practice daily.  Now, I continue to grow with the same two dynamic programs by deepening the stretch and intensifying the same basic poses.

I rise early in the morning so I practice A.M. Yoga with Rodney Yee while still in my pajamas.  It gets my mind & body in gear for the day ahead.  P.M. Yoga with Patricia Walden is my way of de-stressing when I get home from work and change into some comfy clothes.  The poses in this segment have a way of helping you achieve a good night’s sleep.  I’ve improved my flexibility, along with muscle strength and toning, in addition to reducing arthritic pain that I need to keep under control.  All these benefits, while burning calories and building a healthy habit for more energy at the same time!  My stress level has decreased immensely with the relaxation techniques in these two sessions.

We are all busy with life commitments and obligations; kids, work, school, errands, etc.  You may think there is not enough time in the day for a yoga workout…yet, the time I spend with the A.M. and/or P.M. sessions is so minimal, there is no reason NOT to do it.  Honestly, I look forward to it and I’ll warn you… yoga for the body & mind is addictive.  If you are just discovering yoga or even if you are already practicing, the poses in the A.M. Yoga session are not difficult to do.  The P.M. Yoga session is more challenging, yet simple enough for a novice.  Just do only what your body allows without discomfort.  Pace yourself.  It is recommended to become familiar with the safety guidelines at the beginning of this program or any exercise activity.  Treat your body & mind with this journey to fitness and begin to de-stress yourself.

A.M. and P.M. Yoga is available at Amazon.

There are tons of Yoga products on the market today, and some of them are really good, however, be careful of Yoga DVDs – most of them are not about Yoga but about some style of fitness, never addressing the mind but only the body. This DVD, however, is pretty good :)

With yoga, the de-stressing of the mind comes first, and if you stick on to the routine, other benefits follow. Although it takes time to see the true benefits in terms of weight loss, it is worth pursuing yoga because you are less likely to indulge in unhealthy behavior such as frequent snacking and skipping exercise that arises from anxiety and depression.
