First Day of Back to School – Let the games begin

by Gayla Baer

Today IS the day! This morning at 7:00 AM our four kids scurried out to the end of the drive awaiting their first bus ride of the school year. Of course I was just inside the sun porch trying to control my excitement as I watched the little devils angels board and take their seats.

I feel as though I have my life back and to be honest, I just don’t know where to begin. I’ve been creating a To Do list most of the summer, anticipating this day and now that it’s arrived, where do I begin?

I’m anxious to test new affiliate programs to see how they compare while on the other hand, I’m anxious to get my websites cleaned up.

Just a few items from my own To Do list:

  • Organize blog categories
  • Investigate Feedburner ads
  • Sign up and test new affiliate programs
  • Develop and launch a real press release
  • Focus more on social networking
  • Put more time and ‘me’ into my blog posts

I know there are many more parents out there who have compiled their own lists for their Back to School season – so what’s on your to do list and how do you plan to tackle each item you have listed?

In a way, I’m envious. My kids go back to school next week. It’s a bittersweet envy, though.

I’m excited about having more time to focus on my work, but I’ll definitely miss them during the day.

Today I had a whole bunch of ideas for blog posts, but then decided to focus on the kids instead. I went “light” on my personal blogs and only posted “meaty” stuff to my blogging gig.

There’ll be time enough to focus on my personal blogs next week.

Seriously I have a long list. I’ve been thinking about this all summer. I’m going to comment more on other blogs, do some more indepth reporting with more interviews (baby in the background – bad), figure out how to navigate the ranking systems on Technorati and Google and all that stuff I’ve had no time for, read more blogs about blogging and how to market them, edit better, go through all my past blogs and link to blogs they relate to. I have some other writing/non-blogging things I want to accomplish as well, yet have not had the time. I also want to learn a little html so I don’t look so stupid when I post a link and don’t know how to make it look pretty. Get to know the Blogher network. Oh, I’ve got plans baby.

I do not think I will miss my kids during the day. I think it will be sweet, sweet silence in which I get to think and work for a blissful 10 hours a week. One off to kindergarten and one to mother’s day out. The baby will have me to himself for three days a week and I’m going to try not to neglect him too badly while I work.

But, I’ve got 2 more weeks, our year is starting late due to the building of a new campus.

My daughter will start back on the 27th, but she’s been in band camp since Aug 1st and that has consumed a full day like school. I think once she is actually back, I am wanting to explore more affiliate programs myself and take some off my blogs that don’t seem to be working for me. I also need to spend more “me” time because I don’t have any now during the summer. Now, gotta get a cup of coffee.

Two days back into school and I’ve already got a big hole put into some of my bigger projects. I was able to get a new desk and filing cabinet and get my office space a bit more organized. I was feeling in terrible disarray over the last several months and getting that accomplished makes me feel as though I can make serious progress now.

As for missing the kids, I do miss them during the day some. But I’ve had a bit of a motto for a few years now — “How can I miss you if you don’t go away?”

Missing someone is a good thing. It shows that you love them and like being around them most times :)

Three of ours just went back to school, too. The fourth starts preschool in about a week. Freedom!

My ONE has only been home 2 weeks because he had summer school but I can’t wait for the 28th. Its been raining here for 5 days and no end in sight. I had the last 2 weeks of vaca planned out for swimming. Who knew that in August I would be building an Ark?

Thanks for posting, your blog is both interesting and entertaining. We all want the best for our childrens future so it is important that they get the school help they need and do well in exams. As with all exams the key to passing any test is proper preperation.
