Get to Know Your Kid is a book by Shana Connell Noyes. Each page contains a thought-provoking question designed to stimulate discussion and sharing. It also provides space for you to write your child’s answers. The idea is to leave you a lasting record of memorable insights and moments you’re your child.
I tested the concept asking my son one of the questions; “What makes you most proud of our family?” The answers I received were not what I’d expected. He said he was most proud of our family because we did the ‘right thing’ even though it was hard. When I asked him what he meant, he reminded me of an incident a few years ago when he was only four, and we stopped driving in the middle of a thunderstorm to help a stray dog off the street and find its owner.
I had no idea this event had such an impact on him. I was thrilled to learn he was paying attention to doing the ‘right’ thing and enjoyed our expanded discussion that had him opening up about kids at school, how he felt about himself and what he thought was important for our family. I knew this book was really special when the next day he asked me when we could ‘do’ the book again.
