Google Adsense for Search – What’s The Big Deal?

by Gayla Baer

I keep getting the same optimization tip each month through Google Adsense as follows:

Dear Publisher,

Here is your optimization report for the month of October. After an automatic review of your sites, we think you might be able to improve your monetization using the following tips:

Adsense for Search adds both functionality and revenue to your site.

You are not currently using Adsense for Search on your sites.

*begin sarcasm* Perhaps I’m a bit too impatient, but isn’t a year plenty of time to try this feature and realize that it’s just not going to work?

I thought so. But hey, if Google is telling me I’m doing something wrong, I’m thinking perhaps I should listen. Especially hearing through the grapevine that SO VERY MANY amazing bloggers page ranks dropped a BUNCH recently. *end sarcasm*

Seriously – what is the deal with Google? They are cutting off their nose to spite their face! Doesn’t it seem they are penalizing the people who are encouraging more sign ups to their program simply because they are incredible, trustworthy bloggers who display Google Adsense on their blogs?

I’ll admit, I’m one to check out similar topic blogs and see what they might be doing and test the waters on similar products and the greatest bloggers/earners lead by example – as far as I’m concerned.

If I see a blog on Beer Bottle Caps that’s been in business for three years and the only advertising they are displaying is Adsense? You can bet I’m going to be first in line to sign up when and if I ever do decide to tap the topic of Beer Bottle Caps.

Methinks Google is placing too much trust in the grips of someone or something other than sending out actual eyes and minds to examine what blogs are worthy and which ones fall short. Sure it may be find to send out a bot or two to pull in those that might send up a red flag, but are they actually taking the time to examine the blogger, their work and their following?

Just because a blog has a gazillion links coming in doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a link farm or generating false page views or clicks – Heaven forbid! It could very well be that the(se) person(s) is(are) the Messiah(s) of Blogging and have truly earned those links through their honesty and hard work. Perhaps it’s just difficult to see when you’re thrust upon a pedestal as high and mighty as Google.

So tell me, after seeing the reports of some of my favorite blogs fall so steaply, why should I trust anything Google says? What’s more, why should I even stick with them? I’m sure there are other methods of advertising out there who would be pleased to have my measily business and loyalty.

I’m just not sure I trust Google, their algorithms or their page ranks any longer!

Regardless of how much I moan and groan about the drop in page rank, I do have to admit that Paul Scrivens says it best with Google Took My Balls and Went Home. Note, if you’re easily offended you might not wanna go there – though it does explain why there seems to be more men in the blogosphere than women.
