Starting Today – I will continue to take part in the Do Follow Movement – but with much stricter moderation.
If your comments look like spam, they will be marked as spam.
If a reader wishes to participate in conversations and comments on MomGadget, they will be required to use their name, NOT keywords.
If a linked website appears to be spammy or inappropriate, the comment will be removed.
I don’t mind one bit taking a few extra minutes out of my day to moderate comments so that my readers and commentors have the benefit of a little link love.
I will be taking extra measures to insure that link love is worth giving!

Thanks for the mention. I recently added a comment policy page with a similar tough approach.
Thanks for the links, I’ll be reading them in a bit. I hate comment spam, I get it frequently and put it straight in the trash.
I agree, I added a notice that “Name (this is for a person’s name, if a person’s name is not entered the comment is not likely to be approved)” since all Spam listed keywords they wanted to Spam and it is for Name after all. Using actual names makes comments seems more like a real conversation too.
I think you’re absolutely right to do this. I’ve been battling a terrible spam problem. I’m still 3000 emails behind. Sometimes, you just gotta get tough.
Thanks for those links. I’ve been on the fence with this “no-follow/do-follow” thing, and I’m curious to see how other bloggers are using it.
I use the Akismet spam filter, which catches most of the spam.
Once in a while a spam will slip through the filter. If I determine it’s a spam (by following the link) I don’t allow it to be published.
Things pertaining to adult entertainment and pharmaceuticals are spam since my blogs have nothing to do with those topics.
Hey there,
This seems to be a hot topic lately. I know I’ve experienced a pretty good sized upsurge in SPAM comments since I hopped on the Do Follow bandwagon.
But like you, I just delete them and move on. I think doing something that benefits my core readers is worth a couple extra minutes.

You deleted or put a nofollow on a comment of mine because I used the screen name AV Enthusiast, which I have also used in web forums. Yes, my web site is also called AV Enthusiast. The site is neither spam, nor adult, and I posted a comment on your blog because I read an article of yours and had something to chime in with. If I remember correctly, you even responded, and I replied again.
Here, I’ll post with my first initial and last name. I understand not wanting to be deluged by comment spam, but don’t punish people who are legitemately (sp?) commenting on one of your articles.
If the comment has nothing to do with the post at hand I usually mark it as spam.
Today I had to go to a full comment moderation because I had a few peeps come on board with some serious name calling.
It’s a sad day when you can’t express a point of view without being nasty ugly, ya know?
I really need to do the comment/follow thing but never seem to have enough time to get everything done in a timely manner.
I can tell they are about to go to seed. ,
Can you let me know how it went? I have been considering doing this on my blog to improve the number of comments we get! Did this turn out to be a good move?
I had to do the same thing on my blog. Most Solar Blogs end up getting tons of spam. I keep getting the ones where they try to get you to buy something for WordPress. I’ll be sure to stay on topic.
