Every now and again I find myself completely entrenched in a conversation about blogging. Explaining HOW *I* can make money at it and all the reasons why I’m not rich – you know? The whole if you can make $3,000 a month then why not triple it mindset?
By now most everyone who watches television to any degree has heard of blogging. Whether it’s the half-backed remark about a personal dating blog by the former Doogie Howser on How I Met Your Mother or whether it’s streaming through mass media or a more political playing field like the one Glenn Reynolds hangs out on – the ‘term’ blog itself is widely known.
The whole concept of actually making money via blogging is a completely different ballgame. Many people just can’t seem to grasp the concept and once they do get it, many think its as simple as slapping up a Blogger Blog and going to town talking about their day with grandma, their babies first step or how they feel about the upcoming election.
Let me state loud and clear, for the record — it does NOT work that way!
Unless your on the same playing field as Darren Rowse or John Chow, you’re not likely to get rich from blogging. So don’t be placing your special order for that beefed up Mercedes just yet.
The only financial claim I’ve EVER made where my blogging is concerned is that you can earn a modest and comfortable living. Beyond that, it’s as iffy as winning the next PowerBall drawing. Sometimes you just never know what the next month will bring.
For those who think blogging is easy? I’ve got news! I’ve spent the last two days observing Every Single THING around me as if it were my next topic to be blogged.
Coming up with new and entertaining content is a real challenge. It’s not something you can shut off every weekend. You have to constantly be on your toes, eyes wide open and snatch up any breaking news, dynamic trick or thought that you can.
Being the first one to dish up hot news can mean the difference between success and failure.
If you can’t come up with the content, you better be willing to do half naked cartwheels through the parking lot, because you’re going to need something to keep your readers loyal to your blog — if you can’t educate your readers, you better be willing to entertain them.
Blogging is a very tough arena to break into! Finding an untapped niche is impossible, so the best you can hope for is that you can serve up content better then the next guy.
Blogging is however, much easier then my previous job that had me working in an office with 20 women. I swear I’d rather work with a hundred men then two women (no offense girlfriends, but y’all can be quite catty sometimes!).
I love working from home, I love not having to be subjected to office politics and to be quite honest, I think it’s the fear of ever having to go back to life in a cubicle that keeps my creative juices flowing and makes it easier to work 10 hour days.
I don’t think the ‘business’ of blogging will ever be as easily explained as say ummm running a bait shop, but if we were all selling bait, who would there be to catch the big fish?
