Over the last several days, I’ve been faced with a decision that I wasn’t prepared to make and I certainly didn’t count on getting a bad case of food poisoning either.
Yeah, I’ve been playing lame duck the last couple of days.
Hubby and I went for breakfast and The International House of Pancakes and there was something more than sausage in the gravy. Another customer complained that it tasted like soap, but I so was NOT going to take that third bite to convince myself that it was really bad and to pinpoint what the funky taste might be.
Now, why on earth did I bring that subject up? Well, the whole time I was laying low and as sick as a dog, my blogging mind was still going full throttle over a business decision that I was being faced with making.
One of my largest affiliates has announced they are undergoing a rebranding of sorts and will be now promoting their enhanced products under a new name while a sister company promotes the old product under the former name.
I’m not an affiliate of the “sister company” and wasn’t sure if I was going to become one.
I had a decision to make –
completely edit all my content to change the old name and affiliate links to the new brand and new links
or
Leave the old pages, content and become an affiliate of the sister site and just change the affiliate links on existing content while beginning a whole new category for the new product line.
Well, to make this long confusing story short – after communicating with the ‘new’ company, I found their customer service to be sub standard and their ability to protect confidential information seriously lacking. They were revealing information that was frankly, none of my business — no matter how trustable I might be, it was unethical.
It didn’t take much more then the exchange of a few emails for me to realize that I was not willing to risk my site, visitors, customers and my own integrity for the few bucks a new affiliate link could offer me.
Sometimes we are faced with tough decisions – decisions that are likely going to cost us hundreds of dollars, but in the end, I realize that I wouldn’t be me if not for my integrity and self respect.
