I’ve Got a Painful Secret to Share – I Got Fat!

by Gayla Baer

We had not had a family portrait made and it was something that was important to me – while everyone grumbled all the way, they did mom the huge favor of slapping on a smile and allowing me the one thing I wanted for Christmas. When our proofs came back, I locked them up and have not looked at them again. I cried because I didn’t know the person in them that was wearing my shirt.

It wasn’t until the proofs came in that I realized just how much weight I’d put on. All my life I was one of those girls who was pencil thin. I never thought I’d ever have to worry about my weight – and never did. In fact, I didn’t own a scale simply because it was never a major concern.

Three years ago I quit smoking – over the course of time, I honestly didn’t realize how much weight I was packing on. I’d always wondered how fat people could NOT see how fat they’d become if they owned even one single mirror. Suddenly I knew, I was one of them. I was just under 200 pounds. How the hell did THAT happen?

It’s true! It’s far too painful for me to share the photos at this point, but I will – once I reach my goal weight of 135.

Quickly I jumped into proactive, I’m going to starve myself mode and began eating ONLY Lean Cuisine. That worked for a while and in fact, by early February, I’d lost 20 pounds.

I couldn’t afford Nutrisystem or Jenny Craig – that was out of the question and knew there had to be a better, more affordable way.

It was in March that I realized that was no longer working and I had to do something different. That’s when I went to see a nutritionist. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

The fruits I’d been eating, while good for the most part, they were working against me. I learned that when I ate fruit, if I would each a chunk of cheese or a teaspoon of peanut butter with it, it would work together to keep from working against my goal.

What I learned was how to eat the right foods that work together to reduce my weight instead of working against me and packing it on.

Two habits that I have changed and do every single day are:

I drink my 100% Whey Protein – Gold Standard in Chocolate often.  I have one for breakfast – a few throughout the day when I feel like I’m getting hungry and need to take the edge off until meal time.

I also eat a few High Protein Energy Snack bars that help get me through from meal to meal. I did recently try the South Beach Diet bars and although the protein isn’t quite as high, they are quite tasty.

These drinks and bars can be purchased near the pharmacy of any Walmart for a fraction of the cost and is a much more effective and realistic approach to losing weight – as far as I’m concerned.

I’m happy to report that I’m now at 153 and dropping steadily. For 5?7? that’s not bad and the doctor says to go to about 140 but I just don’t feel comfortable there. I’m going back to my usual weight.

I don’t really do much exercise and can only imagine if I were to combine what I’m doing with a little workout – just how far I’d be.

I can’t tell you how easy it’s been to drop the 45 pounds I have and I can’t encourage others enough to try it.

I don’t take medications, I don’t do anything else besides curb my diet with a lot of protein. That’s it.

One of my favorite habits has been to drink the protein drink about 15 minutes before a family meal – that alone helps reduce the intake during that meal.

If you’ve tried dieting before and have found a method that works, why not share it here? I’m sure those going into the holiday season would appreciate the tips on keeping off the winter wool.

Yes, you did get fat, but then you got thin again! Congratulations again, its really amazing how you did it without all those diet books and crazy plans. I was reading your other post, and you said you did it just by watching the junk food you ate. What a great idea, so glad it worked for ya.

Kent @ Whey Protein Review March 9, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Whey protein is great for helping one to control weight and build muscle mass, and I used to think that was all it did, too. Not so long ago I discovered that whey protein also boost one’s on internal production of Glutathione – the “Mother” of all antioxidants!!

However, in order to reap the full benefits of the original protein molecule one needs to consume a whey product that has not been De-Natured, as in stripped of all the beneficial co-factors that Mother-Nature included with this powerful health serum. Yes folks – whey protein should be the foundation of your basic nutritional regiment, as well. Oh, but only a good high-quality “Cold-Processed” whey protein will work. Also, it needs to be a whey product that was produced from grass-fed cows, too; that is, in order to obtain the most bioactive benefits. One of the best whey protein powders that meets these standards is “Action Whey.”

I also take Sea-Vegetables every day because the vegetables we all eat were most likely grown in mineral deficient soils.
