Simpli-EZ Quilting Tools from Simplicity Studio

by S. Warren

Every quilter knows there are three essential tools that make rotary cutting fabric a successful and satisfying experience. The first is a good ergonomic rotary cutter with a sharp blade, the second is a quality self healing rotary cutting mat, and finally a good set of acrylic rulers.

When it comes to rulers you would be surprised with the wide variety of choices. There are common rulers for squaring up blocks and cutting strips and specialized rulers for cutting angles, shapes and patterns. Simplicity Studio has recently introduced a new line of sturdy rulers in a variety of sizes and shapes to help you create quilts and quilt blocks with ease.

Designed to be used by both left and right handed quilters, the numbers on the Simplicity Studio rulers are clear and easy to read. Big bold letters in black are for right handed use and the bright red letters are for left handed use. Solid black lines mark the ½” lines both horizontally and vertically. All edges are marked at 1/8″ intervals with a short hash mark and at 1/4″ intervals a longer hash mark. Each ruler is made of clear 1/8” thick sturdy acrylic. No flimsy rulers in this bunch! A small hole near the top center of the ruler allow for easy hanging on a pegboard.

For cutting squares and squaring up blocks, I recommend a ruler that has a built in ¼” seam allowance. Simplicity offers Simpli-EZ Squares in four convenient sizes; 4 ½”, 6 ½”, 9 ½”, and 12 ½”. In addition to the ¼” markings on the outside edge, the interior of each square is marked at ¼” intervals as well. Convenient 45 degree diagonal lines from corner to corner for mitering corners and cutting triangles.

For cutting and measuring accurate strips, borders and bindings, Simplicity Studio offers two sizes of Simpli-EZ Rules; 6 1/2” by 12 ½” and 6 ½” by 24”. The 12 ½” rule is great for working with fat quarters. The 24” rule will most likely end up being your most used ruler as it is great for cutting long strips from fabric lengths. In addition to all the features of the Simpli-EZ Squares, these rulers have additional measurements that are printed with full numbers. For example, 4 1/8”, 4 3/8”, and 4 5/8” are clearly marked on these rulers. No more counting lines with your finger! Simpli-EZ Rules also include 60 degree lines for mitering corners and creating triangles.

If you are new to quilting and want to start out with just a few rulers and grow your collection from there, I would recommend purchasing the 6 ½” and 12 ½” Simpli-EZ Squares and the 24” Simpli-EZ Rule. These should get you through your first few projects. I have been asked if we carry the Simpli-EZ bias ruler at our shop. Ladies find it at large shows, but they don’t seem to be able to obtain it locally. One lady told me to go to Missouri Quilting Company and that is how I found your name and info. Please tell how we can purchase some of the rulers to have at our shop. Carolyn
