Supermarkets in Singapore will not provide plastic shopping bags on the first Wednesday every month. Some consumers were unhappy. I applauded the move and thought it should be extended to every Wednesday. We used too much disposable plastics for food and drinks. In the oriental society, another disposable items that can be cut down are the disposable wooden chopsticks. Just imagine the numbers of trees have to die for our comfort.
Funny about the disposable wooden chopsticks, Japan is trying to promote them again since it saves on plastics and is a Japanese traditional product.
The bag looks nice. It is upsetting to have so many plastic bags. They arent as durable as they used to be and I find I’m always throwing them away.
Back in my single days, I’d take my backpack with me shopping and fill it up at the checkstand but with a family it isn’t that easy anymore.
Hey,
Great article, I feel exactly the same. I have started using these jute bags from a UK supplies (I’m in the UK) and they are much better. This kind of thing is simply BETTER than plastic and I think we should all move towards entirely replacing our plastic bags with these kids of eco friendly alternative.

The truth is petroleum is used for everything directly or indirectly, even food needs petroleum (fertilizers, harvesting, transportation…), but every little action counts
I have that same guilty feeling every time I check out, especially when they double-bag my groceries! These are such a cute alternative — I need to keep a stash in the trunk of my car.
A report on the production of carrier bags made from recycled rather than virgin polythene concluded that the use of recycled plastic resulted in the following environmental benefits:
* reduction of energy consumption by two-thirds
* production of only a third of the sulphur dioxide and half of the nitrous oxide
* reduction of water usage by nearly 90%
* reduction of carbon dioxide generation by two-and-a-half times
A different study concluded that 1.8 tonnes of oil are saved for every tonne of recycled polythene produced.
I’ne been always using plastic bags. The are convenient and don’t take much space. I’ve never even thought about using reusable shopping bags. I didn’t consider them to be comfortable or fashionable. But your artcile just amazed me! It appeared that reusable are not just convenient, but stylish! They look awesome! So bright and colorful! I’m definitely buying at least one!
Very nice and interesting post. To control the pollution, use need to use reuseable and disposal bags.
