The Tale of the Re-Gifters

by Gayla Baer

Re-gifting isn’t just about getting rid of something that you really didn’t want for Christmas, it can also be seen as an art form, a mental challenge and even a game that families can play together, year-after-year.

This year my husband started something that’s sure to become an annual family tradition for many years to come. It started with a black Ken doll by Barbie.

Naturally, my son didn’t want, nor would have EVER asked for a black Ken doll.  But he got one! From this year on, that Ken doll will be stored in a safe place and re-gifted to the next recipient the following year and thus the tradition begins.

Now, as for the re-gifting, we’ve all done it so there’s no real shame in admission, right?

You’re always going to find yourself in that awkward position of receiving a gift and not have having one to give back. So you sprint out of the room acting as if you have a gift in waiting and pull out a gift card or some small treasure that was given to you toss it in a gift bag, tear off the previous tag and pass it on.

The cycle starts very early  I even found myself explaining to my kids this year that if they receive a gift that they already have or have had before to just play it off like it’s something new.I’d rather do that then to have to hurt someone’s feelings. Then it dawned on me  I was encouraging my kids to tell a fib. How wrong is THAT?

Have you ever found yourself in an awkward situation where your kid blurts out something rude about already having one of those.  Have you received something that you’d never use or wear in a million years and have found yourself passing it on to someone else?

Worse yet, have you ever slipped up something terrible and gifted back a gift that was given to you to the person who gave it to you? How embarrassing would that be?

Thank goodness my memory hasn’t failed me that much yet!

How about some examples of when it’s “OK” to re-gift? Anyone have any mannerly ideas on that one?

Umm…guilty as charged – more than once! Tip: put a sticky note on the item with the date and who gave it to you so you don’t regift incorrectly!
