A couple of weeks ago I was approached by Toshiba with an offer to feature Toshiba laptops for the MomGadget.com Mom’s, Dad’s and Grads campaign. Being the fan of all things Toshiba, I was thrilled to do so.
After I conducted my personal review of the laptops for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, I was put to task of going out into my community and hand selecting two individuals to give them to.
After careful dancing around to make this a surprise for both the recipient and her mother, I was able to make delivery.
This is the letter I gave her along with her new laptop:
Dear Darrian,
Thanks to Toshiba and MomGadget.com, I’ve been given the privilege of being able to recognize you, your hard work, efforts and contributions to our local community with a new Toshiba laptop.
When I was approached by Toshiba to help coordinate a campaign for the upcoming graduation season, I wanted to dig a bit deeper than the typical campaigns, to somehow make a difference in the life of a very deserving individual.
Through careful consideration, observation and a little sleuthing-style investigative work, the choice became obvious.
You work so hard to improve your life and the lives of others. Holding two jobs and attending nursing school can’t be easy. Perhaps with a new laptop, pursuing your education will be made just a little bit easier.
You are a beautiful person, both inside and out. Your family speaks so highly of you and what few times I’ve encountered you, you’ve always been so pleasant, despite the personal load you carry.
Thanks for being such an inspiration and good luck with your education. You are going to make a wonderful nurse someday.
The thing that makes this campaign so special is the fact that I was able to be a part of a campaign that shows young people that even when they don’t think people notice, they do. Whether it’s through Facebook, MySpace, standing in line at the local convenience store, at the checkout of your neighborhood pharmacy – people do notice. People. Always. Notice.
I’ve always tried to teach my own kids that for every action there is a consequence. And sometimes, those consequences make all the hard work and effort seem worth it.

I just wanted to thank you for the selecting my cousin Darrian Real to be the proud new owner of the Toshiba laptop. She is an inspiration to me. I am also currently working toward my nursing license. I have often gotten dicouraged and thought of Darrian. Her hard work and determination has reminded me if she can than I can. I am 12 years older than her and have watched her grow up to be who she is today. I am so proud of her! If our grandma Fairchild could see her now, she too would be so proud!!
Thank you again,
Suza Fairchild-Ridner
Way to go! Great way to recognize great kids. I know there are so many of them out there and, yes, they are noticed.
@ Suza – Thanks for your comment. Being a nurse can’t be easy – I have such a high level of admiration for those who can, because God knows, I could never do it.
Hang in there. I can imagine getting there has to be tough, but the actual being there has to be SO rewarding. Good luck with your education.
@ Marijke – Thanks girl! I know you know how tough nursing school is huh?
Hello
I want to know how did you find out about Darrian. Your blog is truly an inspiration. People like you, that give rewards to other people’s hardwork really made it means a lot to them. It is really a hart warming experience to Darrian that someone knows her hardwork experience. I hope not all only Darrian will get noticed by you.
Godbless and nice blog!
The area I live in is relatively small. While I didn’t know Darrian very well, I know people who do. I am always observing and listening to people – and it just seemed to me that Darrian was working so hard, pursuing an education and doing it on her own. That kind of effort needs to be recognized. I was lucky to be in the position to do something really special for her. Thanks for commenting.
What a great campaign to be part of. Love that you were asked to give back to your community- thanks for sharing.
Hi Gayla
Just found your blog, truly inspirationa. And Wow, you were approached by Toshiba? That’s a lovely article, lots of us don’t notice kids and when we do we often just complain at them. We should notice when they’re good kids too, cos they often are! Keep it up Gadget Mom!! S
how on earth did you decide who to give the laptops to? That must have been such a difficult decision… still from the response you got I’m guessing you made the right decision! Lovely post, made me smile.
Steve
