World Myths and Legends – a Book Review for Kids

by mea

Are your youngsters interested in mythology as my grandson is? He came home from high school excited because he had to research Greek mythology and write a report for Freshman English class.

Then I received a book to review, World Myths and Legends – 25 Projects You Can Build Yourself, by Kathy Ceceri and illustrated by Shawn Braley. Even though some of the projects may be simple ones for a 15-year old, there are ones that do interest him, along with the information about the myths and legends of various cultures.

This is more than a “how-to” book. The author provides information about many myths and legends, then projects tying in with them. There are retold tales from ancient cultures around the world. Some we’ve heard before. Others are new.

Among the projects:

•Wrap a mummy
•Build a star finder
•Make a Celtic armband
•Construct a Bata Thunder Drum
•Make a Buddhist Stone Stupa
•Make an Indoor Boomerang

When your youngsters are complaining, “I’m bored, Mom,” these could be interesting projects for fun and learning.

(World Myths and Legends by Kathy Ceceri and illustrated by Shawn Braley; published by Nomad Press. Ages 9 and up, focus on Social Studies and Literature.)
